Intermediate Oboe Students, Step One –

Step One-Moving forward with intermediate skills

Intermediate oboe students using Book Two material have learned the basics of playing in the keys of Bb, Eb, F, and Ab in Book One and are playing with good posture and with a more mature sound using the appropriate embouchure and breath support.

Oboists are able to control the reed, take care of the reed, and adjust the cork to fit the well of the oboe.  Being aware of good articulation, oboists can demonstrate good tonguing and slurring  with both staccato and legato notes.

Oboists should have a method book with an accompaniment CD so they know the melodies and tempos of the various exercises and tunes designed to teach specific oboe skills.  It is important to listen to these accompaniment CDs first while fingering the melody lines. Keeping a steady beat and playing with good rhythm is the heartbeat of excellent oboe performances with solo, chamber music, and band/orchestra literature.
