Advanced Oboe Students, Step Five- Selection of Oboe Solos and Chamber Music for Contest

Step Five- The selection of appropriate oboe solos and chamber music

Advanced oboists should be performing solos and chamber music at local and state music contests at least once per year.  The sequential selection of good oboe literature  and chamber music is important.  your oboe teacher can advise you on the best pieces to perform at your skill level.  There are various skill levels within advanced oboe playing.

Starting your solo portfolio with Handel, Telemann, Marcello, and Cimarosa oboe solos is a great starting sequence.  Advanced oboists can follow with more sophisticated oboe solos by Haydn, Mozart, Hindemith, Britten, Schumann, and Bellini.

In addition to great oboe solo performances there are solos with the band and orchestra in local school groups and at all-state band and orchestra festivals.

There is wonderful duet literature for two oboes, oboe and flute, and oboe and violin by Handel, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Telemann, and Bach.  Trios for oboe, flute, and clarinet and oboe, clarinet, and bassoon are exciting and fun to prepare.  Woodwind quintets include flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon are very impressive but seldom heard for many reasons.  These chamber groups for the advanced oboist can bring fun, excitement, and motivation into your playing.
